Map of all nearby star systems closer than 12.5 light-years to Earth and many notable star systems within 25 light-years.
Shows confirmed exoplanets as of 2018.
The Astrocartica Mapping System
The way the stars are projected on the map is different than other 3D star map systems.
First, the X and Y coordinates are measured like they would be on a normal flat graph-type map.
The Z coordinate, however, is what makes this map different.
Each star has a line connecting it to a specific distance on the radius of the circle.
The height of the star is measured along the connecter from the circumference (0) on the circle to the point on the point where it ends inside on the radius.
Here are 2 examples on the figure (below) as how to measure the Z coordinate distance -
The is first is Sigma Draconis. It has coordinates of X= -3.4, Y= +17.1 and Z= +7.0.
The star is connected by a solid gray to the distance representing +7.0 light-years on the radius of the large white circle measured from the circumference to toward the center.
The second example is Groombridge 34. It has coordinates of X= -5.0, Y= +9.8 and Z= -3.7.
This star is connected by a dashed line (representing stars with negative (-) Z coordinate. That distance is also measured from the white circle toward the center.
Star Map Art
The Astrocartica has a minimalist art style. It is a very popular style to use with star maps of all kinds. Maps using this style usually have simple circles and lines for effect. The Z coordinate projection system the Astrocartica uses is made to help it use this art style.
Star System Scale
Exoplanets have been proven to exist since 1995. Many of these planets are near enough to us to be on the Astrocartica. Instead of simply putting symbols indicating planets next to star systems, I put them in a distance scale graphic which shows the distance of the planets to their sun and each other. The scale is not to be confused with a logarithmic scale. It is linear in that each zone in the scale graphic is 10x larger than the one inner to itself.
